Healthy Pre and Post Workout Nutrition – What to Eat and When

We’ve all been there right!? That post- workout hunger where it feels like you could eat a whole pizza (with extra cheese, obviously) or a Bucket of KFC! But before you go reaching for something that may derail your hard-earned progress, let’s talk about the best ways to fuel up before and after your workout. With the right pre- and post-workout nutrition, you’ll be able to crush your goals without needing to nap for 3hrs afterward.

Pre-Workout Nutrition: Fueling Your Body

Your pre-workout meal is like putting fuel in your car (or recharging ha-ha) – If you do not do it right, you might sputter out halfway through your session. The goal is to give your body the energy it needs to push through the workout without feeling sluggish. Think of it as your Pre-Party snack before the big fitness rave!

What to eat before your workout:

Timing:

Try to eat your pre- workout meal 30mins-90mins before you hit the gym. You want to feel fueled, not like you are going to hurl during your warmup.

Carbs:

Your muscles will thank you for some quality carbs. Aim for complex carbs, like wholegrains or sweet potatoes, for steady energy through your workout. You don’t want to feel like you are running on empty five minutes into your training session.

Protein:

Protein helps protect your muscles from turning into mush while you are Lifting weights, Doing cardio, or even during Stretch & Mobility Class. Stick to lean options like chicken& Tuna ( or tofu for vegetarians) to avoid feeling overly full.

Fats:

Fats actually take longer to digest, so don’t go overboard here. Keep it light, with a handful of almonds, and your body will thank you.

Pre-Workout Snack Ideas:

  • Banana with peanut butter: because who doesn’t love this combo of potassium and protein? Plus, it’s easy to eat without leaving Peanut butter everywhere (hopefully).
  • Greek Yoghurt with Berries: Protein, Fibre & Carbs. It’s like a snack that knows what it’s doing.
  • Wholegrain Chicken salad Wrap: Simple, effective and delicious. You will feel ready to take on the world, one rep at a time.
  • Protein Powder Shake with Oats: It’s basically a big bowl of fuel to power your muscles for the long haul.

Post-Workout Nutrition: Recover and Rebuild

You’ve crushed it at the gym, so now it’s time to show your muscles some love. It’s all about recovery- helping your body rebuild and recharge so you’re not walking like a stiff robot the next day. Trust me, your muscles will thank you when you get this part right.

What to eat after your Workout:

Protein:

Your muscles have now been through the wringer, so now its time to help them rebuild. Aim for 20-30 grams of high-quality protein to start the recovery process. Don’t skip this part- your muscles are literally waiting for you to feed them.

Carbs:

You’ve burned through those glycogen stores, so its time to replenish them with some healthy carbs. Think sweet potatoes, quinoa, or whole grains- your body will love you for it.

Hydration:

Don’t forget to hydrate! If you’ve been sweating buckets, you’ll want to replace lost fluids and electrolytes. Water’s great, but a little coconut water or electrolyte drink can help you feel like a new human after a tough workout.

Post Workout Meal Ideas:

  • Grilled Chicken with quinoa & roast veges- It’s like a high- five for your muscles after a workout. Lean Protein, complex carbs, and plenty of nutrients to keep you feeling strong.
  • Protein Shake with whole banana & Chia seeds – It’s quick & easy and packs a punch. Plus who doesn’t love a good shake after a killer workout?
  • Tuna Salad on wholegrain Bread- Because you deserve a little luxury after working hard. Bonus: It’s portable if you are on the go.
  • Salmon, Eggs and Sweet potatoes: The ultimate comfort meal. Like a hug for your muscles – but in food form.

So, whether you’re chowing down on a protein packed smoothie or munching on a post-workout snack like you are the next food critic, just remember – fueling your body is as important as the workout itself. After all, you wouldn’t put low-grade fuel in a Ferrari – so why do it to your body? Eat right, train hard, and let those gains speak for themselves!
